This "Readme" file contains information about WordPerfect for Macintosh version 2.1.
============
Version 2.1 includes the features available in version 2.0 through 2.0.4 and the new System 7 features such as Publish & Subscribe, Quicktime™, Apple Events, and Balloon Help.
Version 2.1 requires a minimum configuration of a Macintosh Plus, System 6.0.5, 1MB RAM, and a hard disk.
INSTALLATION
-------------
Some Virus Protection Programs have been known to conflict with the Installation software. If you experience any problems with the installation, scan the disks first, then turn off the Virus Checker and run the installation software.
WordPerfect 2.1 must be installed from the disks provided. Manual installation (dragging the files to your hard disk) will not give a proper installation. The language module is integrated into the application and does not show as a separate file on your hard drive. To install WordPerfect 2.1, insert the Installer disk. Double-click the Installer application icon and follow the instructions. If you choose the "Easy Install" option, the Installer will copy the needed files from each disk into folders named "WordPerfect 2.1" and "WordPerfect" (the WordPerfect folder is located in your Preferences folder). You will be prompted to insert each disk. You can also choose "Customize" and specify which files you want the Installer to copy.
The Private Library is a tool used to manipulate resources (styles, conversions, macros, keyboards, and font maps) so you can use them with any document in WordPerfect. As you create your own macros, styles, and keyboards, you have the option to add them to your Private Library.
Please note that if you change the default folder for your Private Library, you will need to move or copy the Private Library from your System/Preferences/WordPerfect Folder to the new folder specified as the default folder. If you do not move or copy the Private Library after changing the default folder, WordPerfect creates a new Private Library. You then need to manually copy the resources from the original private library into the new library.
If you have problems installing WordPerfect or using any of its features, please refer to your reference manuals and/or call Customer Support for assistance. If you are within the United States, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands, toll-free support is available by dialing 1 (800) 336-3614. If you are in an area where the phone system does not handle toll-free numbers, you can access Customer Support by dialing 1 (801) 226-5522. You will be charged by the phone company for the call if you use the 801 number. Customer Support answers calls from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time, Monday through Friday.
QUICKTIME™
-----------
If your system configuration is at least a 68020 (Mac LC), System 6.0.7 (7.0, 7.0.1), and has Color QuickDraw™, the Easy Install process will also install the QuickTime™ extension, as noted on the Easy Install Screen. Only in this case will the Installation process ask for the disk labeled "WordPerfect5." The QuickTime™ extension and some demo files will be installed. Please make sure that you restart your Macintosh after the installation process is finished so that QuickTime™ will be properly invoked.
When using Movies in WordPerfect 2.1, it is recommended that you set the WordPerfect Application Memory Size (in the Get Info dialog) to at least 2400, however this is not required to use it.
If your Mac does not have the QuickTime™ extension loaded, or does not meet the minimum system configuration required for QuickTime™ (see above), the Movies option in WordPerfect 2.1 will not be selectable.
CHANGES TO CONVERSION FILTERS
------------------------------
Conversions are now stored in the System/Preferences/WordPerfect/Conversions Folder. This allows you to add or remove conversions from the desktop and within WordPerfect.
Installed in the WordPerfect 2.1 folder is a file containing an import for WordPerfect 2.0.x, allowing 2.0.x users to open WordPerfect 2.1 files. WordPerfect 2.0.x users should install this conversion resource into their Private Library using the WordPerfect Librarian in 2.0.x
For additional information about conversions, see the Conversions Readme File in the WordPerfect 2.1/Documentation Folder.
RECOVERING BACKUP FILES
------------------------
When the Automatic Backup feature is on, WordPerfect keeps a backup copy of the active document until you close the file. If you experience a system error (crash) or turn off your computer before closing the file, the backup file is kept in the System/Preferences/WordPerfect folder. To open the backup file, click "Open" when you receive the alert dialog stating "WordPerfect Backup Files Exist" (see p. 7 of Reference).
A/UX OPERATING SYSTEM (APPLE’S UNIX OPERATING SYSTEM)
----------------------
We recommend installation of WordPerfect to a Macintosh Partition/Drive and then copy the WordPerfect 2.1 folder to an A/UX partition if necessary. We recommend that each user have a separate System Folder and also a Preferences folder in the user's System Folder. Copy the Preferences folder from the installation to a Macintosh Partition/Drive's System Folder to each user's System Folder.
If no Macintosh Partition/Drive is available follow these instructions to install to an A/UX partition:
• Create a folder entitled "WordPerfect 2.1" on the first level (root) of the A/UX drive.
• Create folders entitled "Learn" and "Documentation" within the WordPerfect 2.1 folder.
• Create a folder entitled "Preferences" on /Mac/Sys/System Folder.
• Create a folder entitled "WordPerfect" in the Preferences folder.
• Create a folder entitled "Conversions" in the WordPerfect folder in the Preferences folder.
• Choose "Custom Installation" from the installer program.
• Choose every file (other than each WordPerfect option) except "Conversion Filters"
• After the installer program is finished, copy all of the Conversion Filer files from the Cvt folder on the Installer disk into the Conversions folder in the WordPerfect Folder in the Preferences folder in the System Folder.
• Administrators should assign "xwr" permissions (read, write, and execute permissions) separately for each of the following: Preferences Folder, USA-Private Library, and USA-Defaults.
We recommend that administrators then copy the Preferences Folder, from Mac/Sys/System Folder to each user's System Folder.
